Winter Tire Variations

Winter tires are studded or studless. Studded tires have meta protrusions embedded in the tread. The metal grips the ice, which enhances traction. But, when roadways are not covered in snow and ice, the studs have the potential to ruin road surfaces.

Studless winter tires are more commonly preferred. The tires contain improved rubber compounds and tread designs. The tread patterns are typically deeper, which allows slush and snow to disperse from beneath the vehicle. The tread also often features sits known as sipes, which enhance traction. The rubber becomes stiffer and less likely to succumb to road imperfections while being able to remain flexible. The flexibility enables the tires to have better traction on all types of road conditions.
